The Familiar and the Unknown Komitas

In this lecture, Museum Director Lusine Sahakyan presents Komitas from a new perspective, moving beyond the conventional image of him as a tragic and sorrowful figure. The lecture reveals not only the brilliant composer, musicologist, and scholar, but also the man himself—joyful, full of life, endowed with a keen sense of humor, devoted to children, passionate about the theatre, and endlessly curious.

Drawing on memoirs of Komitas's contemporaries, his correspondence, and archival sources, the lecture sheds light on lesser-known episodes from his life, personality, and everyday experiences. Visitors will have the opportunity to discover a more vivid, approachable, and deeply human Komitas, seeing him not only as a national icon but also as a multifaceted individual whose love of life and creative spirit were inseparable from his artistic legacy.
